2028 Democrats like Newsom and Pritzker lean in on AI safety as Washington stalls

California Gov. Gavin Newsom issued an executive order Friday on AI safety, addressing independent auditors and kill switches, and taking aim at Washington: 'With Donald Trump and Congress asleep at the wheel, Governor Gavin Newsom is once again taking the lead.' States have introduced more than 600 AI bills in 47 states, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.
