Debate-shy: Candidates aren't sharing the stage like they used to

In 10 of the most closely watched governor races, half have no agreed-upon debates between major-party nominees—Arizona, Florida, Nevada, Ohio and Texas—up from just two in 2018. In 10 tight Senate races, three states lack debates: North Carolina, Ohio and Texas. Candidates increasingly see debates as optional or a liability, fueled by super PACs and contrast ads.
