AI could help unlock more oil — and emissions

A new peer-reviewed study published in a Nature journal finds AI could help produce more oil and natural gas, leading to a net increase in emissions. The research argues AI's role in boosting fossil fuel production would outweigh its climate benefits from accelerating renewable energy. Co-author Holly Alpine said the emissions enabled by AI-driven fossil fuel extraction are missing from most climate impact assessments.
