Nicolás Maduro and his wife hit with fresh torture charge

Prosecutors charged former Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife Cilia Flores with orchestrating torture of detainees, adding to existing narcoterrorism charges. A superseding indictment in the Southern District of New York alleges Maduro authorized torture, arbitrary detention, and violence against political opposition, including electrocution, beatings, isolation, and simulated drowning. Maduro and Flores pleaded not guilty in January and remain in U.S. custody.
