Cyberattacks expose deeper vulnerabilities in U.S. water systems

Suspected Iran-linked cyberattacks are exposing long-standing vulnerabilities in fragmented U.S. drinking water systems facing aging infrastructure and climate threats. There are more than 144,000 public water systems, including about 50,000 community systems, according to the EPA. Kevin Morley of AWWA says utilities now manage acute cybersecurity threats alongside chronic challenges like climate change and infrastructure deterioration.
